Automatic Gates: What to Know

Power. Most gate motors need mains power. Any new power point or hard-wired connection must be done by a licensed electrician, and many fencers work with one. Solar kits suit long rural driveways.
Safety. Automatic gates are heavy and can trap or injure people, children and pets. Ask for safety beams or sensors that stop or reverse the gate, and make sure manual release is easy to reach.
The gate itself. A motor won't fix a gate that drags or sags. The gate needs to swing or roll freely first, which is why it's best to plan automation with the gate.
Servicing. Like a garage door, a motor needs the odd service. Ask about the warranty and who services it.

Gate Questions

Sliding or swing gate?

Swing gates are simpler and usually cheaper. Sliding gates suit sloping driveways, short driveways where gates would hit the car, and places where there's no room for gates to swing.

Can my existing gate be automated?

Often, yes, if it is solid, swings or slides freely and is the right size for a motor. The fencer will check it and tell you whether it's worth automating or better replaced.

What happens to an automatic gate in a blackout?

Most motors have a manual release so you can open the gate by hand. Some have battery backup. Ask about both when you get the quote.

Do pool gates have special rules?

Yes. Pool gates must self-close, self-latch and open away from the pool. See pool fencing.
