A Pool Fence That Keeps Kids Safe and Passes Inspection

In NSW, most swimming pools and spas need a child-resistant barrier. It is one of the most important fences around a home, and one of the most tightly regulated.

Pool barriers in NSW must comply with the Swimming Pools Act 1992 and the Australian Standard for pool barriers (AS 1926.1). In plain terms, that means a fence at least 1.2 m high, no gaps a child could squeeze through, nothing climbable nearby, and a gate that closes and latches by itself and opens away from the pool. Pools must also be registered on the NSW Swimming Pool Register, and you need a pool compliance certificate when you sell or lease a property with a pool.

A fencer who builds pool fences regularly will know the details, and will set the fence out so it passes a council or certifier's inspection the first time. Call 02 5300 7325 to arrange a quote.

If your pool fence only needs a new gate, hinges or latch, mention that when you get in touch. Small repairs are common, and a gate that won't self-close is worth fixing straight away.

Pool Fence Options

Frameless Glass

Toughened glass panels on small spigots or channels. Clear views of the pool and the most expensive option.

Semi-Frameless Glass

Glass panels between slim posts. A good balance of looks and cost.

Aluminium Tubular

Powder-coated aluminium in black or a range of colours. Practical, durable and the most affordable compliant option.

Gates and Hardware

Self-closing, self-latching gates with the latch at the right height. Hinges and latches wear out and can be replaced on their own.

Pool Fencing Questions

Does my pool fence need to be inspected?

In NSW you need a valid pool compliance certificate (or an occupation certificate issued in the last three years) to sell or lease a property with a pool, and councils run inspection programs. A new pool also needs its barrier approved as part of the pool approval. Your council or an accredited certifier carries out inspections.

Can a boundary fence be part of the pool barrier?

Sometimes, if it is high enough and non-climbable on the pool side. The rules are specific, so have the fencer check it against the standard before relying on it.

Do I need a pool fence for a spa?

In most cases, yes. Spas that can hold more than 300 mm of water generally need a compliant barrier, although a lockable, child-safe lid can be an option for some spas. Check with your council.

My pool gate won't close by itself. Is that urgent?

Yes. A pool gate that doesn't self-close and self-latch is the most common pool safety failure. Keep children away from the pool and get it fixed as soon as you can.
