A Timber Fence That Lasts

Timber is still a favourite for back fences, front fences and screens. It looks natural, costs a little less up front than most alternatives and is easy to repair a paling at a time.

The most common timber fence is treated pine paling: vertical palings nailed to rails between posts, usually 1.8 m high. Lapped and capped fences overlap the palings so there are no gaps and add a capping rail on top, which looks better and lasts longer. Hardwood palings cost more but are tougher.

The weak point of any timber fence is where the posts meet the ground. Dubbo's hot summers, storm winds and shrinking and swelling clay soils test every fence post. That is why many fencers now use galvanised steel posts with timber palings, which gives you the timber look with posts that won't rot or attract termites. Timber Fence Options

Treated Pine Paling

The budget-friendly standard for back and side boundaries. Palings butt up to each other on two or three rails.

Lapped and Capped

Overlapping palings for full privacy, with a capping rail on top that sheds water and helps the fence last.

Hardwood Paling

Denser, stronger timber that weathers to a silver grey if left unstained. Costs more than pine.

Screens and Front Fences

Horizontal slat screens, picket fences and low front fences to suit the style of your home.

Whatever timber you choose, ask what the posts will be, how deep they go and whether they are treated for in-ground use or steel. That one detail decides how long the fence lasts.

Timber Fencing Questions

How long does a treated pine paling fence last?

Often 15 to 20 years with sound posts, longer with steel posts and a capping rail. Palings can be replaced one at a time as they age.

Should I stain or paint a new timber fence?

It's optional, but a good stain or oil protects the timber and keeps the colour even. Most fencers suggest waiting a few weeks after installation so the timber can dry out first.

Are termites a problem for timber fences?

They can be in many parts of NSW. Treated timber and steel posts help a lot. If you have had termites nearby, mention it to the fencer.

Which side faces my neighbour?

Traditionally the smooth paling side faces out and the rails face in, but on a shared fence it's worth agreeing first. Lapped and capped fences look good from both sides.
